One of the more
interesting people to rise through the ranks. Born in 2313 on an
outer colony, Sareth IV, Diaz grew up away from the Federation.
As a child, he could be observed to be different from normal children
in that he shared nothing in common with them.
Sareth IV was
most notably famous as a colony made up of primarily Earth colonists
of mixed descent. The colony was founded in the late 22nd century,
after the Romulan/Earth war.
An unusual feature
of the colony is that the majority of Earth languages have disappeared.
Though Spanish in decent, Emilio speaks not a word of it and neither
did his parents or grandparents. Due to its diverse cultures, the
colony was forced to adapt and took Federation Standard as a language
of convenience.
The colony tried
to keep a feeling of being "small," so when towns reached
a certain size, they would split and set up a new town. For Diaz,
this was a constricting way to live. He was 'expected,' to take
up the position of the town lawyer, dealing with petty disputes
and such.
His education
began to follow this trend, grooming him for the position. Unfortunately,
the law had little appeal for Diaz, who slowly began to rebel against
it. His father, the personal tutor to his son, tried to crack down
on him, and he simply responded in turn, making their life hell.
His teachings included the pary and thrust world of the court, deciveness,
'interogation' (of sorts) of witnesses, and an intense knowledge
of the law, combined with retraining his accent to a somewhat more
formal one.
At 18, Diaz
was given an ultimatum by his parents. Either he stay with the colony
and take the families traditional position of lawyer, or leave.
In a moment of recklessness, Diaz chose to leave and turned his
back on what he once called "home."
He took refuge
in the Federation Embassy, and with no reason to stay, and no other
way off, signed up to join Starfleet Academy.
During his training,
young Diaz found himself assigned with a Starfleet counselor, Academy
Staff worried that someone who joined the fleet would be 'unreliable,'
as compared to volunteer applicants.
Diaz spent months
going through counselling and examinations, as the fleet tried to
decide where would be the best course for young Diaz to take, as
his training on his home colony had included little that was Starfleet
examinable.
At this time,
Diaz put his life into some semblance of an order. He was going
to make something of himself. He wanted to be bigger and better
than the role he had been 'groomed' for.
With the counsellors
satisified by this, Diaz signed up as a commisioned officer, wmajoring
in command and diplomacy, with science and tactical as minors, the
majority of them easily grasped and bent round his mind of the pary
and thrust of law in his blood.
After an uneventful
3 years, Diaz was assigned to his Cadet Training Cruise, aboard
the USS Republic, an even less uneventful assignment.
In 2336, Diaz
was assigned to his first starship, the Oberth class Scobee, as
a junior science officer, on a scientific expedition through the
uncharted areas of the Alpha Quadrant. This too was about to become
a less than eventful voyage, where upon a new species, the X'erinii
were discovered on the planet Larchal IV. Captain Stukov, commanding
officer of the Scobee, decided to lead an away team to the planet
to discover more about this species, taking along with him a small
team, comprising of his best officers and the new Diaz, on his first
ever away mission.
Having noted
the X'erinni, the team were ambushed trying to withdraw from the
X'erinni encampment. Fighting back viciously, the team were sucessful
at the forcing back of the team, but not without Diaz drawing his
phaser and attacking the natives. An accident caused him to kill
two of them.
Upon their return
to the Scobee, and the realisation of his actions, Diaz broke down.
Seeing the affects on his officer, Stukov tried to take the blame,
but his XO ursurped him, informing Starfleet Command of the real
truth.
Diaz was reprimanded,
and assigned to Earth duty, as aide to Vice Admiral Karvetz. Diaz
reflected upon his life, considering if he did the right thing or
not on Larchal IV. He decided he had been in the wrong, accepting
his punishment and slowly tried become a more subdued officer.
In 2340, on
grounds of good behaviour, he appealed and won a transfer off Earth,
with the backing of the impressed Karvetz, onto a border ship, the
Miranda class USS Piety; assigned the Klingon border, with the degrading
of the condition between the Federation and the Klingons. Due to
his tactical training, he found himself assigned as a junior tactical
officer.
The Piety found
itself engaging in combat with a Klingon Battlecruiser trying to
cross the border. The Piety engaged the Klingon's, but had not the
firepower to repell the the cruiser. By this time, the majority
of the senior staff were dead, leaving the young Diaz for his first
trial by fire at tactical. Understanding they were outgunned, Diaz
used his flare for tactical to his advantage, taking advantage of
a nearby asteroid belt for a shield. Pursing the Klingon ship through
it, the Piety used the field to her advantage, ducking and diving
her way through shots, forcing the Klingon's to engage her. The
2 ships were in a stalemate for 3 hours until Federation reinforcements
arrived to drive the Klingon cruiser off.
For his skill
and valour, Diaz was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade
and made Chief Tactical Officer, an unusual move for an officer
such as Diaz, but Starfleet accepted it, when the recommendation
was mysteriously followed with a letter of support from Karvetz.
The Piety saw
little more action afterwards, until 2346, with the signing of the
second Khitomer accords, after the destruction of the Enterprise-C.
With this, Starfleet concentrated its resources on sealing the Romulan
border, as little contact had been made with the Romulans for nearly
80 years.
In 2347, Diaz
was reassigned to the Cardassian border, in view of the Setlik III
massacre, as part of a move to boost the Starfleet prescence in
the region.
His new ship,
the USS Parthernon, served yet again as a border cutter, engaing
in skirmishes with over confident Cardassian vessels attempting
to take out the odd lone vessel. Rising through the ranks, by 2355
Diaz had quickly made Lieutenant Commander.
Investigating
reports of an unusual spacial phenomena, the Parthernon intercepted
to investigate. Discovering a sub-space tear of sorts, with their
limited technology, the Parthernon attempted to seal it, believing
it may have been a new Cardassian weapon. The attempt backfired,
shredding the Parthernon into pieces. The crew were able to evacuate
and Diaz was left on the Cardassian border, with no where to go.
Around this
time, he met Joan Montgomery. A fiery woman, who would stand for
little, by a quirk of fate, the two were drawn together. With a
promotion to commander thrown in, Diaz was reassigned as Executive
Officer of the Ambassador class USS Consolidation and believed he
had escaped Montgomery for the time being.
Fate played
a cruel trick, and in 2357, the new Captain Diaz, due to his outstanding
performance, found himself in command of the Excelsior class USS
Valour, with Joan Montgomery as Chief Science Officer.
During his time
on the Valour, Diaz was responsible for mapping out much of the
extremities of the Federation, as well as resolving numerous minor
disputes here and there - including domestic ones by his marriage
to Joan Montgomery in 2360.
In 2362, Diaz
was offered a place with Starfleet Diplomatic Corps, and a promotion
to the rank of Commodore. He leaped at the oppurtunity and took
it, trying to escape from what he considered to be the 'monotomy'
of starship life, and escape from his wife.
His aptitude
at negotiating led to a swift rise through the ranks, and by 2370,
he had become a Vice-Admiral. Starfleet decided he had become too
valuable to keep using for negotiations, and, without anywhere else
to put him, ironically sent him to the Federation Embassy on Sareth
VI.
It was nearly
a month he was able to spend on Sareth VI before he was reunited
with the memory of his younger self, having left those many years
ago. Reconcilliation failed with his parents, and he returned to
the embassy. A month later, his father was dead. The defiant Diaz
became embittered by this, and refused to speak with his mother,
remaining on icy terms with her and the general populous.
2373 brought
with it a transfer to his old proving grounds, the Romulan and Klingon
borders, to hold off the Dominion. His time there was met with mixed
success, until the Romulans joined the war on the Federation side
in 2374.
Diaz transferred
yet again, this time to the front lines of Betazed, taking part
in the co-operative effort to drive the Dominion back into Cardassian
space, with a resounding success.
With the end
of the war and the damage caused by the Breen attack on Earth, Diaz
was now promoted to the rank of Admiral, and sent to Earth.
For over 2 and
a half years he found himself with little to do. During this time,
he was reunited with a dying retired Admiral Karvatz, who disclosed
to Diaz he had taken a gamble that Diaz could succeed. Karvatz died
6 months later.
He knew few
people on Earth, and didn't care to, so Diaz put in to be transferred.
In the meantime, he took up teaching at the Academy of diplomacy
and tactical to older cadets, or to enlisted men.
In 2378, he
recieved a transfer for a new assignment out in the heart of the
Beta Quadrant, as Commander in Chief of Gamma Fleet, with a promotion
to Fleet Admiral, which he duly accepted.
